Maori
Moriori
Northern New Zealand
Population: 100,000
Dense population that constantly had battles
Polynesian agriculture Society and a tropical climate in New Zealand -so- had a surplus and were able to specialize
Main agricultural product: kumara or sweet potato
Maori had the agricultural products and space to store and feed their fighters
Unlike the Moriori, they focused on improving their tools for gathering crops and fighting.
Part of their specialization was to create warriors and they became a violent tribe
Lived on the "Rekohu Islands" (Chatham Islands) named after the mist found over the islands
Originated from the Wheteina and Rauru tribes of Hawaiki
Hunter-Gatherer society due to cold climate and unable to specialize -so- focus on day to day survival
Hunted/Gathered: seals, shellfish, nesting seabirds, fish (gathered with hands or clubs)
Lived on the Chatham Islands which could only support 2,000 people
Focused on simple technology, weapons, and lacked a strong government
Did not promote war (even took measures to castrate young Moriori boys so war would be less of a threat)
Chief Nunuka Whenua of the Moriori said if a conflict occured it should end immedietely so no harm happens between his people
Moriori remained isolated until 1791
